Black YakBlack Yak winter woolies have that wonderful combination of looking great and being high quality at fantastic prices. They are all hand-knitted (using knitting needles!) and are designed to be practical, eg the wooly hats are half lined, so that you can have the comfort of fleece lining but your head is still able to breathe!

We have Black Yak hats including beanies, bobbles, slouchies and cloche hats, whilst our gloves include mittens, fingerless gloves, fold over mittens and wrist warmers. We also have super soft chunky scarves.

What Black Yak say about themselves…

Black Yak specialises in high quality clothing and accessories from Nepal. We produce very high quality garments using only the best materials – pure new wool, not recycled, nor do we blend wool with man-made fibres. We also use high quality safe dyes as standard.

We are very proud of our fair trade values. In addition to ensuring decent wages and working conditions we provide sickness and medical benefits, pay for the education of several of our supplier’s children and fund community projects such as a recent village river erosion rescue, and the acquisition of a plot of land for building new, clean and safe premises.

Black Yak allows people to realise a very simple desire – to work for a fair wage, to be able to look after themselves and their families and to have a future with dignity and respect.

We are a small home based business.

We keep all stock at home, so when you place an order, we don't have to travel to collect or package your items. It's all done in our home office.

We package the majority of our goods in recycled plastic mailing bags. Originally we started doing this to protect against rainwater, but now it means you have the option to disinfect the package when it arrives in your home.

We have been strictly observing the government's advice and have been socially distancing - staying in apart from for essential trips - since 16 March.

As far as we can be sure, nobody who lives in or has visited our home has been ill since the outbreak hit the UK.

We use the Royal Mail and very occasionally Parcelforce for deliveries. We have a "Drop & Go" account so we don't have to wait in line or get within 2 metres of anyone when we post out your goods. As long as our local post offices are open, and we remain well, we will get your orders out. Like a lot of essential services, the Royal Mail is under pressure with staff self-isolating, so your parcel may not arrive as quickly as you would normally expect, None of this is normal, but we'll get through it together.

Artisans and producers in low income countries rely on fair trade to support their families. Fair trade has helped build some resilience into the communities we help in the form of better hygiene and sanitation, better nutrition and healthcare support. Most of the countries where our goods originate have banned exports and imports to limit the spread of the virus. This means workers are unable to get their work to us, and in some cases their workshops are closed. Our suppliers are continuing to pay for and place orders to keep their producers going through what we hope is a very short-lived period in our lives. In contrast, high street fashion companies in the UK have cancelled $1.5bn in orders with garment factories in Bangladesh, putting thousands of low paid women out of work.

The need for fair trade has never been clearer. Thank you for your support and stay safe and well.
