Fairtrade Fortnight & beyond
Tuesday, 31 March 2015 | Joanna
Fairtrade Fortnight runs in February and March every year and it's the focus of a great deal of media and marketing. This year's theme of "Choose Products that Change Lives" struck a chord with those of us who sell handicrafts as well as the more easily recognised fair trade products - bananas, coffee, tea, chocolate etc.
While it's vitally important that we have a short period in which to focus the world's attention on fair trade, before the media moves on to the next thing, real changes to people's lives won't come from consumers making a single choice during two weeks of the year.
Of course every little helps, and if one person during their supermarket shop tries, likes and switches to a Fairtrade coffee brand during Fairtrade Fortnight, that permanent change in buying habits will be the change in producers' lives.
But what about the other things we buy less regularly? At Accessory Fair and our sister company Aztec Arts we have always chosen to source all the goods we sell from fair trade companies who share our ethics. We love telling our fair trade stories, which you'll find under the "Fair trade brands" section of the website. Our suppliers pay up front for their goods, so by the time it gets to you, the producers are already benefiting from your purchase. Fair Trade is a partnership, and it's important to acknowledge all the players in the supply chain - the goods you buy from Accessory Fair pass directly from the producers who weave, embroider, sew and thread our amazing products, to the UK based fair trade companies we buy from, to us and then on to you.
So we'd like to congratulate and thank all our customers on being part of the team. We couldn't do it without you choosing products that change lives.
