Brand new shop opening

In February 2005 Joanna had just left her first job in retail - Fragrance Supervisor at Superdrug in Stockport. She visited her friend Kath who was living in Mexico at the time. It was to turn into one of those life changing holidays.
Joanna and Kath visited the beautiful, rural, impoverished state of Oaxaca. Two things are notable about Oaxaca - some people still speak Nahuatl, the Aztec language - in fact at the Mayan ruins of Mitla, all signage is in both Spanish and Nahuatl. The second thing both women noticed was all the gorgeous, unusual crafts on sale at small markets all over the state.
This is a classic fair trade story - most BAFTS supplier members and Direct Sourcing Retailers started this way - visiting a marginalised community, appreciating the craftsmanship of the artisans and realising a way to help them by buying their goods and selling them in the UK.
Over the past 10 years, Joanna has grown and developed Aztec Arts into a brand selling beautifully crafted gifts and homewares online and at markets. In February 2015 Accessory Fair joined the group, and the same rules still apply - beautiful designs, affordable, ethical and attractive with a great story.
Now, with a large range of fairly traded giftware and fashion products we are ready to move onto the next chapter - we've decided to open a high street shop.
The shop will be in the market town of Selby in North Yorkshire, a much undervalued town around 15 miles south of York. The medieval Abbey dominates the eastern edge of the town centre and we'll be just round the corner from it - at 16 Finkle Street, Selby YO8 4DS.
Yesterday the first step was taken as the lease arrived at our solicitor's office. It's on its way to us and once it's signed we're good to go.
We're so excited about this and over the next few weeks I'll be blogging about the work we're doing to set up the shop. You can also follow us on Facebook for photos and info about the shop.
We hope to see you there soon.
