Principle 8: Providing Capacity Building
Sunday, 4 December 2016 | Joanna
Just Trade was started in 2006 by jewellery designer Laura Cave. She decided she wanted to work with a group of jewellery makers in Peru, and followed this up with relationships with groups in Ecuador and India.
Laura's approach is to share her knowledge of jewellery fashion and design with the ladies who make the jewellery, so that their designs will be popular in the UK. This kind of training and development increases the capacity of the ladies to maximise the money they can make. It also gives them the opportunity for a stake in the design process and increases their pride in the work they do.
Capacity building is a vital component of fair trade since the capacity to create goods which are increasingly saleable and popular is the only way to create a sustainable business model.
We think Just Trade does a great job and their commitment to increasing sales for their producers is evident.
