Green Canvas Shoulder Bag

Price:  £8.00

This naturally dyed canvas shoulder bag is stylish, practical and fair trade.

Handmade from a durable canvas, the bag is zip fastened and features two external pockets on the front which are secured with press studs.

Internally the bag features a single compartment with a reinforced base, plus a double side pocket which is ideal for a mobile phone, iPod or other small bits. The handles are long enough to go over the shoulder.

This bag comes from the Naturals collection of the Women's Skills Development Project in Nepal.

All bags are hand woven and coloured using natural vegetable dyes and then tinted to achieve various shades. This bag has been dyed with Pomegranate and tinted with Copper, giving an overall light Green effect.

(Please note that this individual method of dying means that the actual shade may be slightly different for each bag).

Hatti TradingHatti Trading supplied us with fair trade bags and scarves since 2007 - but unfortunately they ceased trading in April 2013. They will be a sad loss to the fair trade movement.

Our personal favourite of their ranges is the Naturals Collection – a brilliant selection of hand woven cotton bags which use naturally occurring, eco-friendly dyes such as tea and pomegranate. Hatti are also our main supplier for suede bags.

What Hatti Trading say about themselves...

Hatti Trading works with some amazing producer groups to bring customers hand-made, high quality, unique products from Nepal that are fair to all those involved in the production process. We are a BAFTS registered Importer and our suppliers either directly employ, or provide work for, some of Nepal's most disadvantaged people.

At Friend's Handicraft (our main producer group) women who wouldn't be able to find employment elsewhere due to the stigma attached to their personal situation (divorcees, single mothers, rescued victims of the sex trade) are given a stable job, with a fair wage, good working hours and conditions, holiday pay and sick pay. These women often find themselves outcast from their communities, branded ‘unclean’ and unwanted with no future to look forward to, however, through fair trade employment they often become the highest income earner in a family and able to provide a valuable contribution, resulting in many of the girls being accepted by their communities again.

Fair Trade does make a difference.

We are a small home based business.

We keep all stock at home, so when you place an order, we don't have to travel to collect or package your items. It's all done in our home office.

We package the majority of our goods in recycled plastic mailing bags. Originally we started doing this to protect against rainwater, but now it means you have the option to disinfect the package when it arrives in your home.

We have been strictly observing the government's advice and have been socially distancing - staying in apart from for essential trips - since 16 March.

As far as we can be sure, nobody who lives in or has visited our home has been ill since the outbreak hit the UK.

We use the Royal Mail and very occasionally Parcelforce for deliveries. We have a "Drop & Go" account so we don't have to wait in line or get within 2 metres of anyone when we post out your goods. As long as our local post offices are open, and we remain well, we will get your orders out. Like a lot of essential services, the Royal Mail is under pressure with staff self-isolating, so your parcel may not arrive as quickly as you would normally expect, None of this is normal, but we'll get through it together.

Artisans and producers in low income countries rely on fair trade to support their families. Fair trade has helped build some resilience into the communities we help in the form of better hygiene and sanitation, better nutrition and healthcare support. Most of the countries where our goods originate have banned exports and imports to limit the spread of the virus. This means workers are unable to get their work to us, and in some cases their workshops are closed. Our suppliers are continuing to pay for and place orders to keep their producers going through what we hope is a very short-lived period in our lives. In contrast, high street fashion companies in the UK have cancelled $1.5bn in orders with garment factories in Bangladesh, putting thousands of low paid women out of work.

The need for fair trade has never been clearer. Thank you for your support and stay safe and well.
