Thai Tribal Crafts

Traditional needlecrafts from the hill tribes of Northern Thailand - fair trade and handmade.

All our Thai Tribal Crafts purses are designed and made by ladies of various distinctive tribes in their own villages in the mountainous forested area of Northern Thailand, which results in a wonderful combination of traditional skills in weaving, applique and embroidery together with ethical values.

What Thai Tribal Crafts are all about:

Thai Tribal Crafts has been working closely with the hill tribes of Northern Thailand for many years. They work together to ensure fair trade criteria are embedded into everyday working life. They have been a member of WFTO since 2002

All of the artisans who make the products are also small scale subsistence farmers. Working on these small purses alongside childcare and looking after the family smallholding means women can earn a good standard of living and also send their children to school. They work at their own pace and skills are taught to younger members of the tribe allowing these ancient skills to continue down the generations.

Hill tribes are considered to be disadvantaged ethnic minorities within Thai society and the ability to make and sell goods helps those who wish to preserve their traditions and their isolated lifestyle

The company gives disadvantaged women the opportunity and support to improve their lives through secure work, training and a healthy working life giving them financial security and self-confidence. Each purchase helps us all to create more work opportunities for other disadvantaged women and change their lives and those of their families.

Their mission:

The vision of Thai Tribal crafts is to trade as a Fair Trading Organization through providing development opportunities for the       tribal peoples of Northern Thailand so that they can have a better life.

We operate under the principle of fair trade: the main goal is to pay the producers the highest price as possible and sell the products at a price that is just adequate to meet expenses. Any financial gain realized beyond the basic needs goes back to the tribal people in the form of benefits. Our trade is based on equality and fairness.

Thai Tribal Crafts is a Fair Trade Organization advocating and promoting Fair Trade to improve the livelihood of tribal people in Northern Thailand. As a member of the International Federation for Alternative Trade (IFAT), we try the best of our ability to practice and implement, the code of practice detailed below.
- Commitment to fair trade
- Transparency
- Ethical issues
- Equal employment opportunities
- Concern for the environment
- Respect for producer’s cultural identity
- Education and advocacy
