The Fig Tree was conceived as a centre for all things Fairtrade in the heart of the world's first Fairtrade town, Garstang. Could this be the fairest chocolate in the world?

Our artisan Bean to Bar FIG Tree chocolate is made in small batches so has a limited supply. Each batch is home made from bean to bar in Garstang the world’s first Fair Trade Town using fair trade ingredients where possible and cocoa beans from the Fairtrade cooperative Kuapa Kokoo in Ghana.

Hand made by Bruce Crowther - who was awarded an MBE for services to Fairtrade - using cocoa from the Fairtrade farmers, the chocolate is smooth and rich. Bruce is the father of the Fairtrade towns movement and founded the Fig Tree to promote Fairtrade.  He carries out workshops for children and adults to learn all about chocolate and have a go at making their own! Your chocolate will come direct from the Fig Tree and may be produced to order so there may be a slight delay.

Cocoa for the chocolate is grown by farmers in New Koforidua, the first Fairtrade town in Africa. Each batch is made from cocoa produced by a single individual farmer making it the ultimate in single origin chocolate. Every year's cocoa comes from a different farmer and Bruce knows each of the farmers personally.

All our chocolate is conched for 72 hours to give our signature smooth mouthfeel.
Dark (suitable for vegans)
FIG Tree dark chocolate contains 75% cocoa solids giving it a strong citrusy, vegetal, oaky flavour combined with redberries.
Dark Mint (suitable for vegans)
FIG Tree dark chocolate flavoured with pure fairly traded Holy Llama spearmint essence. The robust garden mint flavour compliments the strength of the 75% dark chocolate.
Dark Chilli (suitable for vegans)
The pure fairly traded Holy Llama chilli essence is added to The FIG Tree dark chocolate in sufficient measure to provide the spice but not too great to stop you coming back for more.
Rich Dark Milk
FIG Tree milk chocolate contains a generous 50% cocoa solids so is best referred to as a rich dark milk chocolate rather than the everyday milk chocolate familiar to most. In addition to the oak and redberries the Ghanaian cocoa beans provide an earthy taste of truffles known to chocolatiers as umami. Umami or savory taste, is one of the five basic tastes (together with sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness) that can be detected by taste receptors on the tongue.
Milk Orange
The FIG Tree rich dark milk chocolate stands up to the acidity of the pure fairly traded Holy Llama orange essence.
Almond Milk (suitable for vegans)
A 50% chocolate bar with a creamy mouth feel made with almond milk rather than cow’s milk a noticeably nutty aroma with a hint of creaminess. A soft texture with a nice melt.
We are grateful to expert chocolatier David Greenwood-Haigh of Coeur de Xocolat Ltd for providing these tasting notes.

We are a small home based business.

We keep all stock at home, so when you place an order, we don't have to travel to collect or package your items. It's all done in our home office.

We package the majority of our goods in recycled plastic mailing bags. Originally we started doing this to protect against rainwater, but now it means you have the option to disinfect the package when it arrives in your home.

We have been strictly observing the government's advice and have been socially distancing - staying in apart from for essential trips - since 16 March.

As far as we can be sure, nobody who lives in or has visited our home has been ill since the outbreak hit the UK.

We use the Royal Mail and very occasionally Parcelforce for deliveries. We have a "Drop & Go" account so we don't have to wait in line or get within 2 metres of anyone when we post out your goods. As long as our local post offices are open, and we remain well, we will get your orders out. Like a lot of essential services, the Royal Mail is under pressure with staff self-isolating, so your parcel may not arrive as quickly as you would normally expect, None of this is normal, but we'll get through it together.

Artisans and producers in low income countries rely on fair trade to support their families. Fair trade has helped build some resilience into the communities we help in the form of better hygiene and sanitation, better nutrition and healthcare support. Most of the countries where our goods originate have banned exports and imports to limit the spread of the virus. This means workers are unable to get their work to us, and in some cases their workshops are closed. Our suppliers are continuing to pay for and place orders to keep their producers going through what we hope is a very short-lived period in our lives. In contrast, high street fashion companies in the UK have cancelled $1.5bn in orders with garment factories in Bangladesh, putting thousands of low paid women out of work.

The need for fair trade has never been clearer. Thank you for your support and stay safe and well.

We have received the "Good To Go" mark from National Tourist Organisations of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Read more about it in our blogpost

The Fig Tree was conceived as a centre for all things Fairtrade in the heart of the world's first Fairtrade Town, Garstang in Lancashire. Sadly due to flooding the centre has had to close its doors, but the spirit prevails and the Fig Tree's unique brand continues in its hand crafted small batch artisan Bean to Bar chocolate. Made by Bruce Crowther MBE - the father of the Fairtrade Towns movement, the chocolate is produced using cocoa beans from New Koforidua in Ghana, Garstang's twin town and the first Fair Trade Town in Africa.

The cocoa farmers of New Koforidua are members of the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative who also supply Divine chocolate.

This photo shows Bruce with Patricia - one of the farmers whose cocoa is used in the making of the chocolate. She is just about to taste the chocolate made from her beans for the first time.

What Fig Tree say about themselves…

Bruce Crowther MBE, Executive Director of the FIG Tree said, “The slave trade abolitionist message was ‘It is simply immoral that people should be allowed to suffer in order to provide us with luxuries such as tea, coffee and sugar at a cheap price’ and sadly that message is still true today. There are people in Ghana growing cocoa for our chocolate that do not have access to clean drinking water and this is simply immoral. We can change this however, by buying Fair Trade products.”

Madam Ferida is one of millions of growers around the world who spend their lives producing crops that we consume- often in the form of luxuries that we take for granted – like chocolate, coffee, tea, sugar and cotton.

“No farmer expects to have an easy life, but we do value our dignity, and we want a bit of control over our lives. In the days before the cooperative and Fair Trade, the dealers would name their price. Sometimes we ended up working for nothing. Now we deal with people who respect us and pay a fair price – Fair Trade has shown us that there is another way.”

All our FIG Tree chocolate is delivered direct from the makers. Sometimes all the chocolate for your order will be in stock and can be despatched straight away, but sometimes it will have to be made to order which may result in a slight delay.

If you order FIG tree chocolate alongside other items, you will receive two separate deliveries.

Christmas Deliveries

November and December are the busiest time for our postal service and orders which are sent First Class, as all your All's Fair purchases will be, can take several days to arrive instead of the usual 1-2 days. Therefore we recommend you order as early as possible so you can be sure you get your items in plenty of time for you to wrap them up.

The Royal Mail's last day for guaranteed Christmas delivery is Monday 21 December 2019. Any orders you place with us on or before 20 December will be posted First Class and should get there before Christmas.

Non-UK Customers:

Customers outside of the UK will have their order shipped by Royal Mail's International Standard service. The cost for delivery depends on the weight of the goods you are purchasing, and ranges from £2 to £20 - you can see the exact cost of shipping in the Shopping Basket before you checkout.

We recommend you order before 30 November if you require any items for Christmas delivery outside the UK.

We are confident that you will be delighted with your purchase, however to ensure that you are completely satisfied Accessory Fair offers a "no quibbles" 14-day returns policy.

If you are unhappy with your purchase for any reason then you can return it to us for a refund or replacement.

For more details see our Returns & Refunds page.

Extended Christmas Returns

We realise that our normal 14-day returns period isn't much use if you're buying a Christmas present for someone a month before the big day. What if they don't like it, or it doesn't fit??

For this reason we have extended our standard returns period for Christmas gifts, and you now have until the 8th January 2021 to return any gifts that you have purchased.

And don't forget that this is a 'no quibbles' guarantee - so if, for any reason, it isn't suitable, feel free to send it back to us for a refund or replacement.
